Supervised and assessed degree practicals gave me repeated experience of culture work, molecular methods, diagnostic workflows, microscopy and biochemical measurement.

Module evidence
General Microbiology
Methods used
Aseptic technique and culture handling, agar preparation, streak and spread plating, Gram staining, oxidase and catalase testing, disk diffusion, colony counting and CFU/ml calculations.
How it was evidenced
The assessed practical series used a mock food-poisoning investigation, with an unknown organism identified from the combined culture, staining and biochemical evidence.

Methods used
Micropipetting, solution preparation, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, spin-column purification, restriction digestion, ligation, plating, colony PCR, clone-screening logic and SDS-PAGE interpretation.
How it was evidenced
The module combined a repeated cloning workflow with a laboratory report and an assessed in-class practical covering pipetting, gel loading, weighing and molar-solution preparation.

Methods used
Specimen-reception and LIMS exercises, microbiology practicals, indirect ELISA with a standard curve and plate-reader measurement, and H&E and Papanicolaou staining.
How it was evidenced
The work followed practical protocols and introduced controls, result interpretation, quality systems and the boundaries set by SOPs and fitness to practise.

Light microscopy across multiple magnifications, graticule calibration, oil immersion, tissue observation, enzyme assays and protein purification.
How it was evidenced
Microscopy and laboratory-skills components were assessed, while the biochemistry module used a six-part laboratory-report sequence alongside practical teaching.

How I describe this experience

These methods come from supervised and assessed degree practicals rather than professional laboratory employment. I have kept simulated and computational exercises out of the hands-on list.

The degree covered pathology, genetics, pharmacology, microbiology, haematology, immunology, translational medicine, quantitative methods and scientific writing.
